Vietnam visa requirements for US citizens

Vietnam immigration policies regulated that all the United States citizens are required a visa to travel to Vietnam for purposes of tourism, business, family visit, or study. Those transiting at Vietnamese airports and not crossing the immigration area do not need a visa. Additionally, visitors traveling to Phu Quoc Island are exempt from a visa if they stay for no more than 30 days. This is just applicable for those who travel to Phu Quoc Island on a direct flight only, and they are not allowed to go to other parts of the Vietnam mainland.

Common Vietnam e-visa mistakes you should avoid

Many Vietnam visa delays and rejections happen because of simple mistakes that could easily be avoided. Taking extra time to carefully review your application can help prevent unnecessary complications and improve the chances of quick approval.

Here are some of the most common issues applicants face:

Incorrect passport information

Misspellings, incorrect passport numbers, or missing middle names are among the leading causes of rejection. All details must exactly match the passport.

Insufficient passport validity

Passports must remain valid for at least 6 months beyond the planned entry date. Travelers with shorter validity periods may be denied boarding or entry.

Invalid photo uploads

Photos should be recent, clear, passport-style images with a plain white background. Edited, cropped, or low-quality images are often rejected.

Applying close to departure

Although processing commonly takes 3–5 working days, delays can occur during peak periods or public holidays. Applying at least 2 weeks before your departure date is the safest approach.

Incorrect travel dates

Travelers cannot enter before the visa start date or remain after the approved expiration date. Many visitors choose the 90-day option for greater flexibility.

Including children on parent’s visa application

Children who hold their own passports must have separate Vietnam visas. Listing a child only under a parent’s application can lead to serious travel issues, including denied airline boarding or refusal of entry upon arrival in Vietnam.
To avoid disruptions during your trip, make sure every child traveling with an individual passport receives their own valid Vietnam visa before departure.

What to do if your Vietnam e-visa is delayed

Visa processing delays can be stressful, especially if your departure date is approaching. Fortunately, there are several steps travelers can take before panicking:

Check your application status

Use your registration number, email address, and birth date on the official e-visa portal to verify whether the application has already been approved. In some cases, approvals appear online before notification emails are sent.

Review for corrections or errors

Applications are sometimes returned because of blurry passport scans, incorrect details, or incomplete uploads. Carefully review all submitted information.

Check your spam folder

Approval emails occasionally land in spam or junk folders instead of the inbox.

Expedited visa services

Private visa agencies can often accelerate pending applications, with some services providing approvals within a few hours or one business day for urgent departures.
